Second Avenue
Since we can no longer make it girl
I found a new place to live my life
It's really no place at all
Just a hole in the wall you see
It's cold and dusty but I let it be
Livin' here without you
On Second Avenue
And since our stars took different paths
I guess I won't be shavin' in your looking glass
Guess my old friendly grin
Must have started to dim, somehow
And I certainly don't need it now
Still I keep smiling through
On Second Avenue
I can still see you standing
There on the third floor landing
The day you visited we hardly said a word
Outside it was rainin'
You said you couldn't be stayin'
And you went back to your flowers and your bird
Since we can no longer see the light
The way we did when we kissed that night
Then all the things that we felt
Must eventually melt and fade
Like the frost on my window pane
Where I wrote, "I Am You"
On Second Avenue

She
She may be the face I can't forget
A trace of pleasure or regret
May be my treasure
Or the price I have to pay
She may be the song that summer sings
May be the chill that autumn brings
May be a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day
She may be the beauty or the beast
May be the famine or the feast
May turn each day
Into a heaven or a hell
She may be the mirror of my dream
A smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell
She who always seems so happy in a crowd
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud
No one's allowed to see them
When they cry
She may be the love that cannot hope to last
May come to me from shadows of the past
That I remember till the day I die
She may be the reason I survive
The why and wherefore I'm alive
The one I'll care for through the rough and rainy years
Me, I'll take her laughter and her tears
And make them all my souvenirs
For where she goes I've got to be
The meaning of my life is she

The song was written as a theme tune for the British TV series Seven Faces of Woman.

So You're Gone
So you’re gone. The sun will still keep shining
Though you’re gone there’d be a silver lining
Life goes on
So you’re gone no reconciliations moving on
That beckoning vacation’s proving long over due
I’ll be lost over you though you’re gone
I won’t even know you’re gone
With zing and with pep I’ll greet the new day
The spring in my step will give me away
I can’t do a thing but accept the old come what may
No worse for the wear not finding you there
I nearly don’t care about why you’d go
Goodbye and so you’re gone
With zing and with pep I‘ll greet the new day
The spring in my step will give me a way
I can’t do a thing but accept the old come what may
No worse for the wear not finding you there
I nearly don’t care about why you’d go
Goodbye and so you’re gone
No tears will find my pillow you’re gone
But here’s a sign it’s still oh very wrong
My heart won’t let you go even though I know I know it
So you’re gone

Starry Starry Night
Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land
Now I understand

What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night
You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could've told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you
Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frame-less heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Sunset Grill
Lets go down to the Sunset Grill
We can watch the working girls go by
Watch the basket people walk around and mumble
And stare out at the auburn sky
There's an old man there from the old world
To him, its all the same
Calls all his customers by name
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
You see a lot more meanness in the city
Its the kind that tears you up inside
Hard to come away with anything that feels like dignity
Hard to get home with any pride
These days a man makes you somethin'
And you never see his face
But there is no hiding place
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
We can watch the working girls go by
Watch the basket people walk around and mumble
And stare out at the auburn sky
There's an old man there from the old world

That's Life
That's life that's what all the people say
You're riding high in April
Shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune
When I'm back on top, back on top in June
I said that's life and as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks
Stompin' on a dream
But I don t let it, let it get me down
Cause this fine old world keeps spinnin' around
I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race
That's life I tell 'ya I can't deny it
I thought of quitting baby
But my heart just ain't gonna buy it
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try
I'd jump right on a big bird and fly
I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out
But I know one thing
Each time I find myself layin' flat on my face
I just pick my self up
And get back in the race
That's life and I can't deny it
Many times I thought of cuttin' out
But my heart wont buy it
But if there's nothin' shakin' come this here July
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die

The Living Years
"The Living Years"
Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got
You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defense
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts
So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different date
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be O.K.
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye
I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

The Nearness Of you
It's not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me
Oh no, it's just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation
Oh no, it's just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams came true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you will only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you

The Stranger
Well, we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out
And show ourselves when everyone has gone
Some are satin, some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of a stranger
But we'd love to try them on
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south
every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south
every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
When the stranger comes along

The Way You Look Tonight
Some day, when I'm awfully low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight
Yes, you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft
There is nothing for me but to love you
And the way you look tonight
With each word your tenderness grows
Tearin' my fear apart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
Touches my foolish heart
(instrumental)
You're so lovely. Never, never change
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please arrange it? 'Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
It touches my foolish heart
Lovely Don't you ever change
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please arrange it? 'Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight
Just the way you look tonight
The song was written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Dorothy Fields.
Fields later recalled, "The first time Jerry played that melody for me I went out and started to cry.
The release absolutely killed me. I couldn't stop, it was so beautiful."
They Say It's Wonderful
They say that falling in love is wonderful
It's wonderful, so they say
And with a moon up above, it's wonderful
It's wonderful, so they tell me
I can't recall who said it
I know I never read it
I only know they tell me that love is grand
And
The thing that's known as romance
Is wonderful, wonderful, in every way
So they say
You leave your house some morning
And without any warning
You're stopping people, shouting that love is grand
And
To hold a girl in your arms
Is wonderful, wonderful, in every way
So they say
They say that falling in love is wonderful
It's wonderful, so they say
And with a moon up above, it's wonderful
It's wonderful, so they tell me

Rumors fly and they often leave a doubt
But you've come to the right place to find out
Everything that you've heard is really so
I've been there once or twice and I should know
You'll find that falling in love is wonderful
It's wonderful, as they say
And with the moon up above it's wonderful

There's Something On your Mind
This Is All I Ask
As I approach the prime of my life, I find I have the time of my life
Learning to enjoy at my leisure all the simple pleasures
And so I happily concede
That this is all I ask. This is all I need
Beautiful girls, walk a little slower when you walk by me
Lingering sunsets, stay a little longer with the lonely sea
Children everywhere, when you shoot at bad men, shoot at me
Take me to that strange, enchanted land grown-ups seldom understand
Wandering rainbows, leave a bit of color for my heart to own
Stars in the sky, make my wish come true before the night has flown
And let the music play as long as there's a song to sing
And I will stay younger than Spring
Learning to enjoy at my leisure all the simple pleasures
And so I happily concede
That this is all I ask. This is all I need
Beautiful girls, walk a little slower when you walk by me
Lingering sunsets, stay a little longer with the lonely sea
Children everywhere, when you shoot at bad men, shoot at me

This Masquerade
Are we really happy here
With this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding understanding anywhere
We're lost in a masquerade
Both afraid to say we're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play
Thoughts of leaving disappear
Every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons that we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade

Too Late Now
Too late now to forget your smile
The way we cling when we danced awhile
Too late now to forget and go on to someone new
Too late now to forget your voice
The way one word makes my heart rejoice
Too late now to imagine myself away from you
All the things we've done together
I relive when we're apart
All the tender fun together
Stays on in my heart
How could I ever close the door
And be the same as I was before?
Darling, no, no I can't anymore
It's too late now
All the things we've done together
I relive when we're apart
All the tender fun together
Lives on in my heart
How could I ever close the door

Tower Of Song
Well my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
In the Tower of Song
I said to Hank Williams: how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered me yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
A hundred floors above me
In the Tower of Song
I was born like this. I had no choice
I was born with the gift of a golden voice
And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this stage right here
In the Tower of Song
So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I'm very sorry, baby, but that doesn't look like me at all
And I'm standing by the window where the light is strong
They don't let women kill you
Not here in the Tower of Song
Now you can say that I've grown bitter but of this you may be sure
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there's a mighty judgement coming, but I may be wrong
You see, you hear these fucking voices
In the Tower of Song
I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
And I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
But I feel so close to everything we lost
And we'll never have to lose it again
Now I bid you farewell. I don't know when I'll be back
There moving us tomorrow to the tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly
From a window in the Tower of Song

Unforgettable
Natalie Cole & Nat King Cole "Unforgettable" 1991 (audio remastered)
Unforgettable, that's what you are
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
"Unforgettable" is a popular song with music and lyrics written by Irving Gordon. The song's original working title was "Uncomparable" but the music publishing company asked Gordon to change it to "Unforgettable".
The song was published in 1951.
The Nat King Cole version:
The most popular version of the song was recorded by Nat King Cole in 1951 from his album Unforgettable (1952), with an arrangement written by Nelson Riddle.[3] A non-orchestrated version of the song recorded in 1952 is featured as one of the seven bonus tracks on Cole's 1998 CD reissue of 1955's otherwise completely instrumental album, Penthouse Serenade.
On March 30, 1961, Nat King Cole recorded the tune anew in a stereo with Ralph Carmichael and his Orchestra for the album
The Nat King Cole Story (1961).
In 1991, after Elvis Presley's musical director Joe Guercio had the idea to rework Cole's original 1951 recording to create a duet with his daughter, Natalie. The remixed version reached number 14 on the Hot 100, reaching number three on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.[4]
The song also won three awards at the 34th Annual Grammy Awards (1992): Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance.[5]
